Statement by Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath on Louis Riel Day

On behalf of Ontario’s New Democrats, I am proud to recognize Louis Riel Day.

It was 130 years ago today that Canadian politician and Métis Leader Louis Riel was executed for treason. Today, Riel is rightly recognized as the father of the province of Manitoba and is celebrated for his advocacy for Métis rights and culture.

Our province is home to a large part of the Métis Nation and a significant Métis population whose strong and vibrant traditions and culture are important parts of Ontario’s history and its future.

New Democrats are proud to join with the Métis Nation of Ontario and Métis people across our province and our country as we celebrate the life of one of the great founding figures of Canada.
