Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath issued the following statement:
“Today's court decision allowing U.S. Steel to shed its Canadian pension obligations, as well as post-employment health benefits and insurance to over 20,000 retirees and their dependents, and stopping payment of $6 million in municipal taxes to the City of Hamilton is an outrage and a devastating blow to these retirees, and to all Ontarians.
This decision stems from the U.S. parent company's threats to immediately cease all steel production and from a lack of action from both the federal and provincial governments to protect well-paying jobs in communities like Hamilton.
New Democrats will continue to stand with the retirees, their families, the current employees, and the people of Hamilton, as we demand accountability.”
