Wynne continues to ignore steel crisis: NDP

Ontario NDP MPP Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin) once again called out the Premier for continuing to stand on the sidelines doing nothing while the Steel industry’s pleas for help go unanswered.

“The Premier met with Chinese officials, she’s met with the owners of Essar steel overseas — will the Premier meet with the Mayor of a city in her own province who is looking for help for thousands of members of his community?” Mantha asked.

“With eight thousand jobs and another eight thousand pensioners at stake the failure of the steel mills for the people of Sault Ste. Marie is not an option,” said Mantha.

The Mayor has asked that the province play a lead role in the restructuring process for Essar steel. To date the Liberal government, including the MPP for Sault Ste. Marie, continue to blame their federal cousins for lack of initiative instead of acting to keep these good-paying jobs in Ontario.

“Is the Premier prepared to meet with local municipal leaders, the unions, pensioners, creditors and potential buyers to tell them that this province values steel manufacturing and sees a future for it in the province?” Mantha demanded.
