Ford Conservatives have voted no on paid sick days 25 times in 2021

QUEEN’S PARK — Monday marked the 25th time the Doug Ford Conservative government has voted no on paid sick days.

The NDP tabled a new paid sick days bill since early December 2020 — one that includes government-paid sick days during a pandemic, in addition to the NDP’s long-standing call for permanent paid sick days. Since then, the Official Opposition has forced a vote again and again, and the Ford government has blocked people from getting paid sick days, again and again.

“Andrea Horwath and the NDP keep putting solutions and proposals on the table that could have saved lives and prevented countless outbreaks, and the Ford government keeps blocking them,” said NDP MPP Peggy Sattler (London West), who tabled the Stay Home if You Are Sick Act. “It’s horrifying to think of how many people have gotten sick, and how many lives have been lost, because the Ford government didn’t want to spend the money to let workers stay home when they’re sick.

“Today, people are still going in to work with a cough or fever because they have no choice if the rent is coming due, and the kids need to be fed. We need paid sick days now.”
