Ford government takes Toronto transit commutes from bad to worse

Tory cap and trade cuts leave $3 GO fares in jeopardy

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP Transit Critic Jessica Bell says Doug Ford’s cuts have left desperately needed transit programs, like the $3 GO fare, in limbo.

“Toronto commuters were looking forward to a faster and cheaper commute starting in January, when they could take advantage of a new low fare of $3 to ride GO and the Union Pearson Express. But instead of make life easier and more affordable for GTHA commuters, Doug Ford cancelled Ontario’s climate change plan and programs it funded - like the $3 GO fare,” said Bell during question period on Wednesday.
“Now Ontarians are without a plan that funded cheaper transit fares and sped up commute times – and stuck with a $3 billion price tag, just so Doug Ford can do favours for big polluters.”

Bell, MPP for University—Rosedale and former Executive Director of transit advocacy organization TTCriders, said the Ford Tories are making Toronto’s already difficult commutes worse.

“Toronto is a world-class city with a world-class transit problem,” said Bell.

“Our region has longest commute times in North America and transit fares are now the highest in Canada. Instead of improving congestion by giving commuters fast and affordable transit, this government is taking us from bad to worse.”
