Green Party leader props up Ford’s municipal election-rigging legislation

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario Green Party leader, Mike Schreiner, has voted to support the quick passage of Doug Ford’s municipal election-rigging legislation – a move NDP house leader, Gilles Bisson says is a betrayal of Guelph voters.

“Mr. Schreiner had a chance to do the right thing and stand up for municipalities and voters,” Bisson said. “Instead, he supported Ford’s unilateral move to meddle in municipal elections and helped prop up Mr. Ford’s fast-tracking of undemocratic legislation. It’s really disappointing, and speaks to the Green Party leader’s priorities.”

The vote was on a PC motion to move faster to push through Doug Ford’s scheme to rig in the number of Toronto city councillors, and cancel elections already underway in a number of different municipalities. Instead, Ford wants those positions appointed or chosen in backrooms. Ford’s sweeping attack appears to be a revenge plot, designed to get his political enemies out of the way.

“Why would Mr. Schreiner support that?,” Bisson asked. “It makes us wonder what he would do if Ford decided to meddle in municipal elections in Guelph.”
