Local MPP hosts community meeting for families affected by closure of Davenhill Senior Living

TORONTO — Jessica Bell, NDP MPP for University-Rosedale, will hold a community meeting Thursday evening for the more than 150 people who are being evicted from a local seniors’ home.

According to media reports, residents of Davenhill Senior Living recently learned that they will have until the end of the year to find new accommodations.

“Residents of Davenhill Senior Living are understandably anxious and worried about what this means for them,” said Bell. “Moves are disruptive and stressful under the best of circumstances, and they are that much more daunting for seniors who planned to stay put and who may have additional health challenges, like chronic disease, memory loss, and mobility issues. It is not ethical to attempt to evict seniors in the middle of an affordable housing crisis.

“It’s getting more and more expensive to rent in Toronto, and the wait for accommodations in long-term care can be years long. The options these seniors face are only made worse by Doug Ford’s moves to scrap rent control on new units and underfund long-term care beds.”

Bell’s community meeting will provide a forum for families affected by the closure of Davenhill Senior Living and help them understand their options and their rights.

“We need to help the people affected by the closure of this seniors’ home, and we need to look at what can be done to prevent this from happening in the future,” said Joel Harden, Ontario NDP Seniors critic. “We have a responsibility to take care of those that built this province, and to do that we need more stable housing options for seniors, not fewer.”
