NDP calls on Wynne government for inquests into deaths of children in care

During question period on Tuesday, Monique Taylor, the NDP critic for children and youth services, called on the Wynne government to hold a mandatory inquest each time a child under its care dies, after several children and youth living in foster and group homes died over the last six months.

In February, fire swept through a foster home near Lindsay, killing 14-year-old Kassy Finbow and Andrea Reid, one of the caregivers.

“This tragic event highlights several serious concerns about foster and group homes,” said Taylor.

Taylor reminded the legislature that in the past six months, four aboriginal youth living in group homes in Ontario have died.

“Kanina Sue Turtle, Courtney Scott, Amy Owen and Tammy Keeash.

“The Nishnawbe Aski Nation, as well as the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth, have called for inquests.

“The Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies has said ‘a full understanding of prevention strategies that need to be implemented’ is required.

“This is a crisis with our most vulnerable children.

“Will this government institute mandatory inquests into the deaths of all children in care?”
