Statement from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on the Privacy Commissioner's annual report

QUEEN’S PARK–Following the release of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario’s 2017 Annual Report, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath released the following statement:

“I share the concerns of Ontarians and the Privacy Commissioner about the use of personal data for political gain – especially when it comes to the questions we all still have about the stolen personal data of 407 ETR drivers. We don't know whether that personal data was used by the Conservative party or any of their candidates, and Ontarians have a right to know.

In the wake of the recent conviction of a high-ranking Liberal staffer for deleting emails, New Democrats also support the Commissioner's call for ‘duty to document’ legislation, which, if enforced, would prevent another scandal like the gas-plant coverup scandal.

We appreciate the Privacy Commissioner's report, and ongoing work, and look forward to working with and cooperating with the commissioner's office as the Official Opposition.”
