QUEEN’S PARK – MPPs have received the list of people who applied to speak at the committee hearings regarding Doug Ford’s bill to cut wages and workplace rights. NDP MPPs Catherine Fife (critic for Employment and Jobs) and Jamie West (critic for Labour) issued the following statement:
“113 people applied to have their voices heard on Doug Ford’s bill to roll back wages and workplace rights, and still the government is only allowing five hours of deputations during one day, and only in Toronto. Shutting down the voices of the people of Ontario on a bill that impacts them so directly is disgusting, and Doug Ford should be ashamed.
The NDP put forward an amendment to add three more days of hearings so that everyone who wanted to be heard could have weighed in on the drastic changes to wages and benefits in Ontario workplaces. The Ford Conservatives voted against additional days.
It’s wrong that the Ford Conservatives are not interested in hearing hard-working people’s feedback. And it’s wrong to take money out of the pockets of minimum wage earners and sick days away from hard-working people who count on them."
