HOUSE AFFAIRS ASSISTANT– Full-time Permanent

NDP Caucus, Toronto

Objective

To assist the Legislative Affairs and Research teams to implement the Legislative priorities of the Leader and Caucus.

Responsible to the Director of Legislative Affairs:

  • Assist the Legislative Affairs team, House Leader and Whip to implement the House Strategy including Question Period, Committees and attending related strategy meetings
  • Work closely with the Executive Assistant to the House Leader and Legislative Staff of MPPs
  • Provide administrative assistance and support to the Whip and the Director of Legislative Affairs in the execution of their duties
  • Assist with the monitoring of Committees and the coordination of Committee duty schedules including substitutions
  • Provide back up to the Executive Assistant to the House Leader with the monitoring of the House when it is session, attending the House during Question Period and House Duty meetings as required and be available for late night sittings
  • Assist in the preparation of reports for Caucus and Senior Staff meetings
  • Assist Members in their House duties: coordinating speakers to legislative, keeping track of members’ rotation questions, preparing daily business sheets, informing Critics of upcoming statements and legislation
  • Assist in the coordination of members statements and of private Member’s Public Business.
  • Keep Caucus Critics and researchers regularly updated on up-coming legislation and House business
  • Other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge appropriate to the position of the NDP, the Ontario Government and public affairs and the workings of the Legislature
  • At least one year of recent experience with parliamentary procedure, legislative processes, and standing orders and committees
  • Superior organizational and administrative skills essential
  • Detail oriented and ability to work under pressure and provide effective work according to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent political judgement and the ability to perceive and pursue news angles and political opportunities in the daily flood of information.
  • Proven ability to work energetically with minimal supervision, produce accurate and effective work according to deadlines, and maintain organized records.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to deal with the public, ability to work under pressure, good computer and office organization skills.
  • Ability to write succinctly, powerfully and quickly.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and to travel
  • Experience in an NDP organization and election campaigns would be an asset.
  • Second language skills would be an asset
  • Familiarity with equity, anti-racism and anti-oppression policy frameworks.
