WHEREAS families in east Hamilton are finding thick, oily black soot settled on their windows, porches, vehicles and their children's toys, and residents say the problem is getting worse;
WHEREAS the Ministry of the Environment has collected samples of this material for laboratory testing but has made no commitment to release the results publicly, leaving residents with no answers about what is coating their homes or whether it is safe to breathe;
WHEREAS the site-specific emission arrangements for Hamilton's largest industrial facilities expired in June 2023 and the Ford government promised updated sector-wide air standards to replace them, but more than three years later those standards still do not exist;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, the undersigned residents of Hamilton and Ontario, call on the Ford government to immediately release the full results of the ministry's soot testing to the public, commit to a firm timeline to finalize the industrial air standards it promised in 2023, and give Hamilton families the clean air and straight answers they deserve.
