NDP MPP calls on premier to stop cuts to vulnerable children and families

Monique Taylor, MPP for Hamilton Mountain and the NDP critic for children and family Services, today called on Premier Kathleen Wynne to stop her Liberal government’s cuts and start strengthening Ontario’s social services that children and families depend on.

“Good health outcomes and success in education are determined, in large measure, by social conditions,” said Taylor.

It was OPSEU Social Services Day at Queen’s Park today and Taylor recognized the importance of social service workers who support vulnerable children and families including children with mental health issues, children suffering from neglect and abuse, adults and children with disabilities, and women fleeing violence. 

Taylor called on the premier for proper funding for the province’s social services.

“Budgets in child welfare and children’s mental health have been flat-lined for years and it’s the same story across our social services,” Taylor said.  “Agencies and workers are having to do more with less. There are 12,000 children waiting for mental health services. Children are moved far from their communities to access residential beds. Women are being turned away from shelters.”

“Will the premier stop the cuts and commit to funding social services to ensure every person in this province gets the services they need?” said Taylor.
