Statement by Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on the National Day of ‎Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Today, I join with people across Ontario and Canada for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Twenty-six years ago today, the lives of 14 women were senselessly cut short at l’École Polytechnique in Montreal in a hateful act of violence against women.  Across this country, we remember:‎Geneviève Bergeron, Helene Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte.We honour and remember them, and all women who have experienced violence.

Violence against women remains one of the key barriers to women's equity and equality. It has no place in any society‎.

Ontario’s New Democrats remain committed to taking action in raising awareness of, and helping to, prevent and end violence against women, and to ensure that its victims are supported.  Together, we can create a province where all women are respected, safe from harm and have every opportunity to succeed.
