After trampling Charter rights, Ford unilaterally changes rules at Queen’s Park to horde power

Doug Ford has tabled a motion to enhance his power at Queen’s Park and prevent people who are not members of his government from speaking up or interfering with his plans.

“Ford has already attacked our courts. He’s attacked members of the public visiting Queen’s Park and now he’s attacking anyone that threatens his agenda,” said NDP House Leader Gilles Bisson. “It’s clear that in Doug Ford’s Ontario, the only voice that matters is his and the only rules that he’ll follow are the ones that help him or his friends.”

The Ford Government motion would see the rules of the legislature changed to give his majority government even more power, cutting debates and allowing it to over-ride and reschedule business like motions that comes from any other party. The effect of the changes would limit the already-limited power that other party members have to delay or force debate on legislation being rammed through. The motion removes vital tools that New Democrats rely on to delay hurtful legislation, like the current bill that removes Charter Rights and Freedoms protection.

“Ford is doing all he can at Queen’s Park to consolidate power in his office, steamrolling over our democratic process. Since taking office, he hasn’t even let a single piece of legislation go to committee so the public could have a say.

“New Democrats are standing up to Ford, and speaking out against his revenge fueled plot to take power away from the people of this province.”
