Andrea Horwath, Leader of the Official Opposition New Democrats, has released the following statement on the Independence Day of Bangladesh:

Today, Ontario New Democrats join with Ontarians of Bangladeshi descent in celebrating the Independence Day of Bangladesh. On this day, in 1971 Bangladesh became an independent nation beginning a nine month long War for Liberation.

New Democrats are proud to work with the Bangladeshi community in Ontario and to recognize and honour the important contributions people of Bangladeshi heritage have made, and continue to make in Ontario, Canada, and throughout the world.

We also recognize March as Bangladeshi Heritage Month in Ontario. This month is not only an opportunity to recognize the leadership of Bangladeshi Ontarians in our province but also to celebrate the Bangladeshi language and culture and reaffirm the importance of educating Ontarians about Bangladeshi history and heritage.

This year while the COVID-19 pandemic has lead us to celebrate differently by practising physical distancing to help limit the spread of the virus; I look forward to celebrating Bangladesh's independence with you next year.

বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা দিবস উপলক্ষ্যে অন্টারিও নিউ ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টি প্রধান এবং বিরোধী দলীয় নেত্রী এন্ড্রেয়া হরওয়াথ এর বাণী :

অন্টারিও নিউ ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টি আজকের এই দিনে সকল বাংলাদেশী-অন্টারিয়ানদের সাথে মিলে বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা দিবসকে স্মরণ করছে। ১৯৭১ সালের এই দিনে বাংলাদেশ আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে তার দীর্ঘ সাড়ে নয় মাসের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধ শুরু করে।

অন্টারিওর বাংলাদেশী কমিউনিটির সাথে নিউ ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টি দীর্ঘদিন একসাথে কাজ করতে পেরে গর্বিত। আজকের এই দিনে আমি শুধু এই প্রদেশের না, বরং পুরো কানাডার ক্রমউন্নয়নে বাংলাদেশী-অন্টারিয়ানদের অবদান শ্রদ্ধার সাথে স্মরণ করছি।

অন্টারিও প্রদেশে মার্চ মাসটি বাংলাদেশ হেরিটেজ মান্থ হিসাবেও সরকারিভাবে স্বীকৃত। এই মাসটি শুধু আমাদের প্রদেশের সমৃদ্ধিতে বাংলাদেশী-অন্টারিয়ানদের অবদানকেই স্মরণ করায় না, বরং বাংলাদেশী-অন্টারিয়ানদেরও সুযোগ করে দেয় বহুভাষা এবং বহুসংস্কৃতি ভিত্তিক আমাদের সমাজকে বাংলা ভাষা আর সংস্কৃতির ব্যাপারে আরো ভাল করে জানাতে।

এ বছর মার্চ মাসটি আমরা এক সংকটজনক অবস্থায় পার করছি। তাই স্বাধীনতা দিবস এবং বাংলাদেশ হেরিটেজ মান্থ হয়তো যেভাবে উদযাপনের পরিকল্পনা ছিলো, সেভাবে হচ্ছেনা। ভয়াবহ করোনা ভাইরাসের ছড়িয়ে পরা রোধে আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনের অনেক কিছুই পরিবর্তিত নিয়মে চলছে। তবে আমি আশা করি আমরা সবাই ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে এই সংকট পার করে আগামী বছর বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা দিবস সাড়ম্বরে পালন করবো।

অন্টারিও নিউ ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টির সকল সদস্য এবং নেতৃবৃন্দের পক্ষ থেকে আমি বাংলাদেশী-অন্টারিয়ানদের জানাই মহান স্বাধীনতা দিবসের শুভেচ্ছা।
