Brampton families will pay the price for Liberal sell-off of Hydro One: Horwath

Brampton – Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, and NDP Deputy Leader Jagmeet Singh, met with Brampton residents who are concerned about the Liberal plan to sell-off Hydro One. This town hall is  part of a series of public consultations that New Democrats are holding across the province. Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said that Ontarians will pay the price for the Liberals’ short-sighted decision.

“Ontarians didn’t vote for a sell-off of Hydro One,” said Horwath. “Nobody in Brampton wants their hydro bills to go up, but that’s exactly what will happen if Kathleen Wynne goes ahead with her wrong-headed privatization plans. This is the wrong choice for Brampton and the wrong choice for Ontario.”

The privatization of Hydro One will mean higher rates for the residents of Brampton, and families across Ontario, who are already paying some of the highest electricity bills in Canada. Not only will the sell-off of Hydro One cut a dependable source of revenue for the Province that helps to pay for our hospitals and schools, but it will only cover 3% of the government’s promised 10 year expenditure on transit and infrastructure.

“Instead of choosing to close tax loopholes for big corporations, Kathleen Wynne is making Brampton families and small businesses pay the price,” said Horwath.

Horwath said that New Democrats have heard Ontarians loud and clear. Selling off Hydro One is just plain wrong. It’s bad for Brampton. It’s bad for our province. And it’s bad for generations to come.

“We’ll stand up for the people of Brampton and continue the fight to keep our hydro system in public hands where it belongs,” said Horwath.
