Ford’s refusal to ban handguns impacts safety

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP’s Deputy Leader, Sara Singh, released the following statement in response to Doug Ford’s refusal again on Friday to allow municipalities to ban handguns:

“People, including children, have died, and families are being ripped apart. Gun violence has been increasing every year. Communities are scared.

We’re going to have to tackle the problem of gun violence from all angles — from root causes like poverty, to a gun and ammunition ban in crowded cities, to making sure the justice system has all the tools it needs. Rather than taking an important step, Doug Ford is doubling down on his refusal. We don’t know who has Ford’s ear, behind closed doors, telling him that guns in crowded urban areas are a good idea.

The NDP will continue to fight for municipalities’ right to ban the sale, possession and use of handguns and ammunition within urban areas, because it’s one of the critical pieces of the solution to growing gun violence.”
