Further Ring of Fire delays by Liberal government put good, stable jobs at risk: NDP MPP Mantha

As criticism about lack of Liberal government action on Ring of Fire continues to mount, today in the legislature NDP Northern Development and Mines critic Michael Mantha (MPP, Algoma—Manitoulin) demanded the Liberals begin to show leadership on this file.

“The criticisms have been abundant. The Auditor General’s report found that the government has spent $13 million and has nothing to show for it. Cliffs said they had “zero hope” and that every investment made here was a ‘disaster.’ Sources inside Noront indicate that they have threatened to suspend work,” said Mantha. “The Ontario Chamber of Commerce also reported a lack of investment in the Ring of Fire. First Nations leadership have publicly expressed concerns that the provincial government is violating their agreement.”

“We are losing investment, we are losing companies and we are losing jobs with every passing minute,” explained Mantha.

Martha cited Ontario Regional Chief Day’s words at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada opening ceremony: “Inclusion, investment, infrastructure, and truth and reconciliation are the path forward.”

“This is no longer a game of crying wolf,” cautioned Mantha.
