Horwath’s win in Northern debate a win for families in Nipissing: Lougheed

NORTH BAY – Andrea Horwath’s win at the Northern debate in North Bay means that people in Nipissing can choose a government that respects Northern Ontario and stands up for our priorities, said Erika Lougheed, NDP candidate for Nipissing.

“Andrea Horwath showed heart and grit for Northern Ontario today. Andrea and the NDP care about people in Northern Ontario. That’s why we will invest in our hospitals and schools and make it easier for people to have quality housing that they can afford,” said Lougheed.

Lougheed said Northerners have every reason not to trust Doug Ford or Stephen Del Duca.

“Doug Ford had four years in government and he ignored Northern Ontario. "People in Nipissing counted on Doug Ford and Vic Fedeli's promise to bring back the Northlander, so we could have access to both the north and the south of the province. They failed. We won't trust them again," said Lougheed.

“We know the Liberals aren’t the answer. They have a 15-year record of cutting northern services, cancelling the Northlander, creating a health care crisis and a long-term care tragedy. Del Duca was in Kathleen Wynne’s government when they cut northern transportation and made our winter highways more dangerous. With these track-records, Northerners can’t believe them, and they can’t afford them.

“It’s time for Andrea Horwath and the NDP — it’s time for life to be easier, healthier and more affordable for all of us here in the Northern Ontario.”

With Horwath’s Northern plan:

  • Ontario will hire 300 doctors in Northern Ontario, including 100 specialists and 40 mental health practitioners.
  • The overdose crisis will be declared a public health emergency, and additional supervised consumption sites will be expedited. The NDP will also invest in treatment, including detox and rehab beds.
  • Northern communities will get more training and job opportunities in the trades, mining, and in the film and television sector. Ontario will open community-run employment and training centres.
  • High-Speed internet will be available province-wide by 2025.
