Inside the push to save public health care

You have a right to health care that’s there when they need it, but right now that’s at risk.

The Ford Conservatives’ Bill 60, the Your Health Act, is this government’s latest push to bring in two-tier, investor driven health care that will cost you more. It will worsen the staffing crisis, see more emergency room closures, and create a system where the well-connected can jump to the front of the line, and you’ll wait even longer.

And while Leader Marit Stiles and your team of Ontario NDP MPPs were taking this government to task in the House, they were pushing to save public health care when Bill 60 went to Committee, as well.

When Bill 60 went to the Standing Committee on Social Policy, NDP MPPs, including Health Critic France Gélinas (Nickle Belt), tabled 74 amendments. All were designed to keep profits out of health care, protect the safety of patients, ensure fairness for health care workers, and increase transparency and accountability.

Ford’s Conservatives voted against every single one.

And while their ideological legislation ultimately passed, the push isn’t over.
