Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP celebrates Portugal Day

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles (Davenport) has issued the following statement to celebrate Portugal Day:

“Portugal Day is the official national holiday of Portugal, observed on June 10th each year. The day is intended to remember the death of Luís de Camões, who is recognized as the country's greatest national icon.

Every year, the wonderful Portuguese community here in Toronto gathers in Little Portugal to celebrate the vibrant culture and traditions at the Portugal Day Parade with the help of incredible organizers and community volunteers.

As the MPP for Davenport, I am proud to represent the highest population of Portuguese-Canadians in Ontario and across the country at Queen’s Park.

70 years ago this May, Canada welcomed thousands of Portuguese immigrants who came here seeking opportunity, freedom, and a chance at a better future. The Portuguese-Canadian community has a deep-rooted history in our city and it is an honour to work with such exemplary leaders and community members every day.

As the leader of the Official Opposition, I am committed to fighting for a better future that honours the Portuguese-Canadian community – from the first wave of new immigrants who played a large role in building our city, to the younger generation who are building their lives in our province.”
