NDP MPPs Faisal Hassan (York South—Weston) and Kevin Yarde (Brampton North), NDP critic for Community Safety, made the following statement in response to Friday's fatal shooting of a man near Jane and Lawrence in broad daylight.
"The brazen daylight shooting last Friday, at a time of day when parents were taking their children to school and going to work, was particularly disturbing. Our thoughts are with the victim's family during this terrible time.
As gun violence continues unabated in neighbourhoods in York—South Weston, our community faces ongoing grief, uncertainty, and fear for their own safety and that of their loved ones. One death is too many, yet young people in our community are dying in large numbers.
At public meetings and in private conversations, local residents, community groups and business owners continue to express anguish and frustration at governments failing to address the root causes of gun violence.
Successive governments have failed to invest in the programs and services our community needs to lift young people out of poverty and ensure they have the educational and employment opportunities needed to succeed. Doug Ford cut mental health and youth programming supports, in addition to funding for affordable housing.
We are again calling on the Ford government to immediately address the problem of gun violence from all angles, from investing in the services folks count on to addressing root causes like poverty, to a gun and ammunition ban in crowded cities.”
