NDP Transit critic sounds alarm as report reveals major delays on Ontario transit projects

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP transit critic Jessica Bell has written a letter to the Minister of Transportation, Caroline Mulroney, demanding answers from the Ford government as a new report reveals major delays that could set major transit projects in the GTHA back by years.

The June Infrastructure Ontario Market Update reveals contract signing for the Ontario Line, GO expansion, and the Union Station revitalization have all been delayed upwards of six months to two years.

“The Ford government needs to explain why so many transit projects are being delayed,” said Bell. “The Ford government ripped up a shovel-ready relief line plan to go back to the drawing board, setting transit construction back years.

“Ford is learning the hard way that it’s easy to draw lines on a map, but it’s much harder to build transit. Ontarians do not have to rely on volatile financial markets to deliver transit projects when we can proceed without delay and hire locally using traditional public sector delivery.”
