NDP urges Ford to pass Rent Stabilization Act as top Toronto Housing official pushes ending vacancy decontrol

TORONTO — The Ontario NDP’s Housing critic MPP Jessica Bell (University-Rosedale) released the following statement in support of the City of Toronto asking the Ford government to end vacancy decontrol:

“People in Ontario are smack in the middle of a housing crisis, and Doug Ford’s insistence on allowing landlords to hike the rent unchecked between tenants is a major contributor to driving up market rental prices.

The Ford government should immediately pass the NDP’s Rent Stabilization Act, which would ensure that all tenants in the province pay what the previous tenant paid. The NDP is committed to passing this legislation as a step to addressing Ontario’s housing crisis, and we will retable it in the Legislature this coming session.”
