NDP demands Premier listen to Northwestern Ontario calls for stop to public service cuts during pre-budget consultations

During the provincial government’s pre-budget consultations in Thunder Bay today, Ontario NDP Finance and Treasury Board Critic Catherine Fife demanded that the Premier listen to people in Northwestern Ontario who are calling on the Liberal government to stop cuts to public services families depend on, to invest in job creation, and to stop the sell-off of Hydro One.

“Premier Wynne needs to start listening to people in Northwestern Ontario, who are telling to her to stop the Liberal’s cuts to healthcare and education, to put the brakes on the fire sale of Hydro One, and to begin investing in the creation of good family-supporting jobs,” Fife said.

The provincial government held its pre-budget public consultation in Thunder Bay today. This all-party committee will be hearing from Ontarians across the province on the 2016 budget, making stops in Hamilton, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Toronto, and Windsor during the weeks of January 18thand February 1st

“Today, people in Thunder Bay were loud and clear: this Liberal government has lost sight of what really matters to families.  Northwestern Ontario families are having a hard enough time making ends meet—without having to worry about skyrocketing electricity prices and where their next paycheque is coming from,” Fife  said.

“People in Northwestern Ontario are telling this government to get its fundamentals right, to invest in the public services that families and communities need in hospitals and schools, and to get started on a responsible job creation strategy.”
