Ontarians deserve a government that works for everyone and shares their priorities

This morning, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath held a press conference to highlight the Liberal record over the fall Legislative session and to express the disappointment that so many Ontarians are feeling about the Premier and her Liberal government.

“This is a government that has failed to deliver on the fundamentals that Ontarians expect and deserve from their government,” said Horwath. “This is not the government Ontarians deserve.”

Over the fall session it was revealed that seniors are waiting up to 200 days to get home care. The waiting list for support programs for kids with autism has soared. Hospitals are being cut to the bone, with more than 600 nursing jobs cut this year. And, while the sell-off of Hydro One continues, Ed Clark has set his sights on the privatization of public health care.

“It has become a trend with this government that each session leaves Ontarians more disappointed than the last,” said Horwath. “The Liberals still have no real plan to tackle climate change, no real plan to eliminate homelessness and child poverty, no real plan to create good, lasting jobs, no real plan to help make life better for Ontarians, and, to top it all off, the Premier’s sell-off of Hydro One will actually leave our province in worse financial shape.”

The Financial Accountability Officer’s report revealed that the sell-off of Hydro One could net less than half of what the Premier promised for infrastructure and transit, and will cost Ontario half-a-billion dollars annually going forward. The report also clearly showed that the sell-off of Hydro One has nothing to do with building infrastructure, but the Premier and her Liberal government have chosen to ignore the evidence, ignore the outcry from Ontarians and are plowing ahead with the sell-off of Hydro One.

“People deserve so much better. They deserve a government that gets the fundamentals right, that shares their priorities and actually makes life better – and a little easier – for families,” said Horwath. “Ontarians need hope. They deserve a government that works for all Ontarians – that’s exactly what New Democrats are working to achieve.”
