Brampton MPP Yarde calls for 50% off auto insurance during pandemic

QUEEN’S PARK – With fewer drivers and fewer accidents on the road during this pandemic, Brampton North MPP Kevin Yarde called on the Ford government to reign in the record high cost of insurance with a meaningful rebate for Ontario drivers.

“In Ontario we pay some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country,” said Yarde, the NDP’s Auto Insurance critic. “In Brampton North, we pay the highest premiums in Ontario, with an average of $3,301 per year, more than twice the provincial average of $1,616 per year.

“This government knows that Brampton is one of the cities hardest hit by this pandemic. The people of Brampton are struggling. They cannot afford to take time off work, and they cannot afford these obscenely high premiums. We need relief, and the people of Ontario need relief from these predatory and unjustified rates.

“Will Doug Ford support the people of Brampton and the people of Ontario with a 50 per cent decrease on auto insurance payments during this pandemic? Will he allow payment deferrals for those that have lost their jobs in these times of economic uncertainty, or will he continue to side with auto insurance corporations that are gouging Ontario drivers?”

Last week, Yarde wrote to the minister of finance to request the government mandate lower auto insurance premiums in Ontario. The minister did not respond.
