Ford Conservatives say no to fixing long-term care in Oshawa, Whitby and Scarborough

Conservatives block NDP motion to build 2,000 LTC beds in region

Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath said the Ford Conservatives turned their backs on Oshawa, Scarborough and Whitby families with loved ones languishing on wait lists for long-term care by voting against a motion to add 2,000 new beds in the region.

“Today, the Ford Conservatives shut the door on thousands of families with loved ones who need and are waiting for long-term care in Oshawa, Whitby and Scarborough.

“That includes the Mills family. Steve and Annette Mills are struggling to take care of Steve’s father, Walter, who has advanced dementia. They’ve spent three years waiting for a space in long-term care, and they’re struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel. By voting no today, Doug Ford’s Conservatives shut another door on families like theirs.”

With an additional $6 billion in planned cuts from vital services like health care and education, families are worried that Doug Ford will take the 32,000-person long-term care wait from bad to worse.

“New Democrats won’t let the Conservatives give up on people like Walter, Steve and Annette. We’ll continue to listen to families and give hope that their aging parents will get the quality care they deserve, when they need it.”
