Ford government makes more cuts to OHIP

QUEEN’S PARK — The NDP’s Health Care critic, France Gélinas, said the Ford government proposing to cancel Ontario Health Insurance Program (OHIP) coverage for out-of-country Ontario travelers is alarming. What’s more, attempting to push through changes to OHIP with a mere six-day window for public consultation shows this government has little regard for Ontarians’ input.

Today, the Ford government attempted to sneak in a proposed amendment to the Health Insurance Act, giving the public only until April 30 to give feedback on the cut to OHIP.

“Ford’s proposed change to OHIP coverage for Ontarians traveling out of country fits a disturbing pattern of this government bypassing public consultation as it tries to force through rapid changes to our health care system,” said Gélinas.

“They did this with a major health care bill that opens the door to privatization, they did it with cuts to Ontario public health agencies and local ambulance services. Now, they’re cutting emergency health care services from Ontarians traveling outside Canada.”
