Horwath’s NDP calls for funding for Ukrainian aid, Russian vodka ban

HAMILTON — As the Russian Federation continues its invasion of Ukraine, Official Opposition NDP leader Andrea Horwath is calling for Ontario to provide at least $3 million to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, and match all donations made by Ontarians.

Horwath also echoes the call from the Ukrainian community to ban Russian products from LCBO shelves.

“Our solidarity with the people of Ukraine, who are living in fear for their sovereignty and for their lives, must be concrete,” said Horwath. “On behalf of all the Ukrainian-Canadians in Ontario fearing for their loved ones overseas, and on behalf of all peace-loving Ontarians, let’s do all we can to send support to the Ukrainian people.”

In light of the escalation of aggression by the Russian Federation, Horwath says it is clear more aid will be essential. She is calling for a base donation of $3 million, in addition to an Ontario government commitment to match every dollar donated in Ontario to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.

Ontario has the largest number of people of Ukrainian descent in Canada.
