Kristyn Wong-Tam running for the NDP in Toronto Centre

TORONTO — City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is running for Andrea Horwath’s NDP in Toronto Centre.
Wong-Tam has created new affordable housing, expanded green public spaces and farmers’ markets, secured improvements to parks and ravines, and established supports for small businesses. She is a tenants’ rights advocate and a strong proponent of building affordable homes in complete communities. Wong-Tam is also a human rights advocate, former business owner and champion of Toronto arts, small business community, and local independent culture.
NDP MPP Suze Morrison recently announced that she won’t seek re-election, stepping back to take care of her health. The NDP holds democratic nominations within the party, and the deadline for nominations has passed in Toronto Centre. The nomination meeting will be held April 23.
Quotes
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath
“I’m overjoyed that Kristyn is joining the NDP team. Kristyn has a passion for human rights and advancing equity, for promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting the arts. Above all, Kristyn is a champion for Toronto and the people who live here. She believes deeply in the promise this great city and the province holds. As a City Councillor, they are on the front lines — seeing every day how people are impacted by chronic underinvestment. Kristyn has a drive to make homes more affordable for middle class and working families, and is a committed advocate for fixing health care and home care, and helping seniors age in their own homes. I know Kristyn is going to be an invaluable member of the NDP team as we implement our plans, including universal mental health care. Together, we can defeat Doug Ford and start fixing what really matters to people.”
Kristyn Wong-Tam, NDP candidate for Toronto Centre
“I am ready and excited to join Andrea Horwath’s strong team. Being a City Councillor has been a great privilege, and I’ve loved every minute of it. I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished at City Hall. But I see how the housing market is crushing the dreams of our next generation. I see how the home care and long-term care systems are taking away our beloved parents’ quality of life as they age. I see how hospitals and social services have deteriorated after suffering decades of cuts and funding freezes. So much of what we count on is broken. An NDP government, led by Andrea Horwath, can fix it. Our party’s plan for universal mental health care after a global health pandemic is timely and groundbreaking. Our commitment to build missing-middle homes for everyday people is achievable. I believe Andrea is the next Premier of Ontario. Together, we will get rid of Doug Ford and get to work making life better for people.”
