Liberals roll over and accept Ford’s hostile takeover of the TTC subways

QUEEN’S PARK — Jessica Bell, Ontario NDP Transit critic, released the following statement after the Liberal MPPs at Queen’s Park abstained Thursday from a vote on Doug Ford’s hostile subway takeover scheme:

“It’s dead wrong for the Liberals to sit on their hands and allow Doug Ford to plow ahead with his hostile takeover of Toronto’s subway system. This is a massive slap in the face to the GTA families who built, paid for and use the TTC, and who should have a say in its future.

The Liberals let Ontarians down by letting transit crumble during their 15 long years in government. Now, they are doing nothing to stop Doug Ford from making things even worse. If it goes ahead, Ford’s hostile takeover of the TTC will mean even more delays and even more overcrowding for GTA families who use Toronto’s badly underfunded transit system.

With their silence, the Liberals are now complicit in Ford’s scheme, which will set Toronto transit improvements back decades. The NDP believes transit users deserve better, and will keep fighting to get shovels into the ground on long-awaited projects that are already well under way, and for proper funding for our existing transit system.”
