Marit Stiles joins Hamilton steelworkers for a buy Ontario steel strategy to fight back against Trump’s tariffs

HAMILTON – Today, Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition, kicked off her summer tour in Hamilton with steelworkers to call on the Ford Government to guarantee the use of Ontario-made steel in all public infrastructure projects to create and protect good jobs, strengthen Ontario’s economy, and fight back against Trump’s economic attacks:

“Ontario has a world-class steel sector,” said Stiles. “We should be using Ontario-made steel for nation-building projects – our schools, hospitals, bridges, and transit – instead of sending public dollars out of province or across the border to countries actively working against our economy. We urgently need a buy Ontario steel strategy that bolsters Ontario jobs and industries. It’s just common sense.”

Earlier this month, the Federal government committed to maximizing the use of Canadian steel in government-funded projects. Stiles calls on the province to commit to a buy Ontario steel strategy.

“Hamilton is the heart of Ontario’s steel sector, and the workers here have powered our province for generations,” said Stiles. “When we invest in local industries, we don’t just protect jobs – we create new opportunities, build economic resilience, and make life more affordable for everyday families.”
