WINDSOR – NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West) tabled a motion Wednesday calling on the Ontario government to transfer ownership of the Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve to Parks Canada to facilitate the creation of Ojibway National Urban Park.
Gretzky’s motion builds on the work of federal MP Brian Masse (Windsor West) and has the support of Windsor City Council, Caldwell First Nation and various community and conservation groups. If passed, it would establish a cohesive, federally protected urban park on the land encompassing the current Ojibway Prairie Provincial Nature Reserve, Spring Garden Natural Area, Black Oak Heritage Park, the Tallgrass Prairie Park and Ojibway Shores.
“I am excited and honoured to have tabled this private member’s motion building on the work MP Brian Masse and so many in our community have already done,” Gretzky said. “This is an important environmental project for our community – transferring the land to Parks Canada will help ensure the protection of local endangered species and natural heritage areas, aid flood mitigation efforts, create publicly accessible green space and encourage eco-tourism in the Windsor-Essex region.
“It’s time the provincial government recognize that and aid efforts to create Ojibway National Urban Park.”
Gretzky will join Masse at a town hall to discuss the initiative with community members.
