MPP West calls on Ford government to support University of Sudbury

QUEEN’S PARK - Sudbury MPP Jamie West called on the Ford government to stop avoiding the University of Sudbury, meet with managers and support their proposal for an independent Sudbury university by and for Francophones.

“The members of the Francophone community in the Northeast feel ignored,” said West. “They are facing a lot of problems and stress since Laurentian University declared bankruptcy. The management of the University of Sudbury would like to meet with the Minister of Francophone Affairs, but the Conservative government is not returning their calls or their letters. No one from the Ford government wants to meet or talk to them.

“When will the minister make an appointment to meet with the University of Sudbury?”

West said that Sudbury Francophones had to fight for their education and the right to have elementary schools, high schools and colleges that are governed by, for, and with Francophones.

“Today the Francophone community is united and speaks with one voice: They want the University of Sudbury to become a university by, for and with Francophones,” said West. “The Ford government needs to stop avoiding the University of Sudbury and start supporting it. The Francophone community in Sudbury has waited long enough.”
