NORTHERN ONTARIO – Northern NDP MPPs Lise Vaugeois (Thunder Bay – Superior North) and Guy Bourgouin (Mushkegowuk—James Bay) are calling on the Ford Government for better working conditions for water bomber pilots and wildland firefighters to address the recruitment and retention crisis.
“While forests are burning and hundreds of people are forced to flee their homes, water bombers are sitting on the ground with no one to operate them. This is what happens when the government cuts millions from our wildfire response and does not treat pilots and firefighters with respect,” MPP Vaugeois said.
“People who put their lives on the line in very difficult circumstances should be able to support their family. We need to pay our wildland firefighters, and our bomber, helicopter, and bush pilots competitive wages, and bring back the full-time positions we lost during the Harris Conservative government."
As bomber pilots are leaving Ontario for better wages, the province is short of five pilots, which has resulted in three water bombers being grounded while wildfires continue in Northern Ontario.
“Wildland fire fighters are on the front lines, exposing themselves to toxic emissions without adequate protections. We need more boots on the ground, more equipment, and a comprehensive plan to protect our communities. We must stop pilots and firefighters from leaving by providing them with the working conditions and protections they deserve. A stronger frontline workforce means a safer Ontario,” MPP Bourgouin said.
