NDP calls on Ford to step up for laid-off workers

Ontario NDP Jobs and Employment critic Catherine Fife released the following statement after devastating news that Bombardier will lay off about 500 workers in Ontario. That announcement follows news that Lowe’s will close more than 27 locations throughout Canada.

“This morning, workers at Bombardier’s Ontario operations learned that the job they count on to support their family could be gone. For 500 families in our province, this is devastating news. Our hearts go out to those now living in uncertainty. Doug Ford and the Conservative government need to let Ontario know what he’s going to do to help these workers and their families maintain stability, connect to new opportunities, and transition their careers.

Earlier this week, workers at Lowes stores throughout the province also learned that more than 27 locations are closing across Canada. It’s important that we, as a province, are there for Ontario workers. Silence from the province is not an acceptable response when families are hurting.

New Democrats will continue to press for solutions.”
