NDP continues calls for public inquiry into Metrolinx following reports showing majority of Ontarians want answers

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario NDP Deputy Leader and Shadow Minister with responsibility for Public Transit, Equity, and Anti-Racism Doly Begum (Scarborough Southwest) and Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transportation Jennifer French (Oshawa) issued the following statement in response to new polling showing that over 70% of Ontarians support a full public inquiry into the province's soaring transit construction costs:

“Ontarians are fed up with Metrolinx’s ballooning transit costs, endless delays, and a government that refuses to be transparent,” said Begum. “More than 70% of people across Ontario are demanding a full public inquiry into why this province’s transit construction costs are among the world’s highest, and Doug Ford needs to listen.

“For too long, Ford has let costs spiral out of control while commuters are stuck waiting and taxpayers are left footing the bill. Ontarians deserve to know why this province has become one of the most expensive places in the world to build transit.”

“A full public inquiry is the only way to restore accountability and give people the answers they’re owed,” said French. “Families, riders, and workers need affordable, reliable transit, not more secrecy and mismanagement.

“Ontario’s New Democrats will continue to push for a full public inquiry, stronger oversight of Metrolinx, and a transit system that finally puts people first.”
