KAPUSKASING - MPP Guy Bourgouin stood with municipal leaders, local unions, and residents, to show that Northern Ontarians are united in their calls for urgent action to reverse the idling of operations at Kap Paper.
“Kapuskasing has always been a proud forestry town. The Ford and Carney governments cannot abandon these workers and families – Our workers deserve action, not empty words.” said Bourgouin.
The situation at Kap Paper is another example of Ontario’s collapsing labour market. With more than 800,000 Ontarians already out of work and another 2,500 jobs now at risk in Kapuskasing, families across the province are being left behind by governments that refuse to act.
“Federal and Provincial governments continue to sit on their hands while thousands of workers are uncertain about their future” said NDP Leader Marit Stiles. “Northern families can’t wait while politicians point fingers. They need immediate commitments to protect jobs, secure livelihoods, and keep the North’s economy strong”.
Northern Ontario’s forestry sector has long faced pressures from tariffs and economic uncertainty. Standing as the last paper mill in Northeast Ontario, Kap Paper’s closure threatens not only jobs, but the economic stability of the region and the forestry sector as a whole.
The NDP calls on both federal and provincial governments to provide immediate support and come to the table with a concrete plan to keep Kap Paper operational and protect thousands of jobs in Northern Ontario.
