NDP MPP Bhutila Karpoche marks first ever Tibetan Heritage Month

TORONTO – Following the passage of NDP MPP Bhutila Karpoche’s (Parkdale—High Park) bill, the Tibetan Heritage Month Act, July marks the province's first ever Tibetan Heritage Month, and makes Ontario the first jurisdiction in the world to recognize Tibetan Heritage Month.

"I am thrilled to wish the Tibetan community of Ontario a meaningful and joyous Tibetan Heritage Month, and to invite all Ontarians to join in learning about and appreciating the distinct history and achievements of the Tibetan community," said Karpoche, who is the first person of Tibetan heritage elected to public office in North America, and whose Toronto riding of Parkdale—High Park is home to the largest concentration of Tibetans outside of Asia, earning the area its unofficial nickname of 'Little Tibet.'

"July is a significant month for the Tibetan community, as on July 6, Tibetans around the world celebrate the birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, an honorary Canadian citizen," Karpoche said.

Throughout the month of July, Tibetan community organizations will be hosting events to celebrate Tibetan heritage through cultural performances, panel discussions, online concerts and more.
