NDP MPP tables bill to recognize July as Tibetan Heritage Month

QUEEN’S PARK — Bhutila Karpoche, MPP for Parkdale-High Park, has tabled a private member’s bill to recognize July as Tibetan Heritage Month.

Karpoche represents one of the most diverse ridings in Ontario. Parkdale, also known as Little Tibet, is home to the largest Tibetan-Canadian community in North America.

“July is an important month for Tibetans around the world,” said Karpoche. “On July 6, we celebrate the birthday of His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, an honorary Canadian citizen.

“This day signifies unity of Tibetan-Canadians and their resilience as a people.”

Karpoche’s bill aims to recognize the important contributions Tibetan-Canadians have made in Ontario as well as raise awareness of Tibetan issues. Tibetan Heritage Month is also an opportunity to educate future generations about the significant roles that Tibetan-Canadians have played, and continue to play, in various aspects of Ontario’s society, economy, and diversity.

Karpoche is the first person of Tibetan heritage elected to public office in North America.
