NDP: Province must focus on new international student visa measures on for-profit “strip mall” colleges, invest in public colleges and universities

QUEEN’S PARK – Jamie West (Sudbury), Official Opposition NDP critic for Labour, Training & Skills Development has released the following statement on the federal government’s cap on international student visas:

“International students at our public post-secondary institutions deserve quality education - they're some of our province's future nurses, construction workers, teachers.

“Years of dramatic underfunding of post-secondary education have made our public colleges and universities over-reliant on unregulated international fees to stay afloat and paved the way for private 'strip mall' career colleges that have been exploiting international students.

“Our province must invest in our public colleges and universities, and ensure these new visa measures focus on private, for-profit colleges.”
