NDP reintroduces bill to keep senior couples together in long-term care

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Catherine Fife (Waterloo) has re-introduced the Till Death Do Us Part Act, which will ensure that senior couples have the right to remain together in long-term care homes and not endure devastating separations.

“Senior couples who have been together for decades should have the right to live out their last years together,” said Fife. “But too often, senior couples face the heartbreaking prospect of being split up when they enter long-term care.”

Fife is renewing the fight to help senior couples stay together as the Ford government puts more couples at risk of being separated in long-term care and placed in facilities far apart. More couples and families could be torn apart as a result of the Ford government’s push to force people waiting in hospital into long-term care homes they don’t want to go to.

“The Ford government should be doing more to help senior couples stay together when then enter long-term care, not making it harder,” said Fife. “It’s more important than ever that we urgently pass my Till Death Do Us Part Act, so no more seniors have to endure cruel separations.”

Fife has been pushing for the Till Death Do Us Part Act since 2019.
