NDP statement on annual Women’s Memorial March for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls

QUEEN’S PARK — Suze Morrison, Ontario NDP critic for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Response, issued the following statement in recognition of the annual Women’s Memorial March for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls:

“Today we recognize the annual Women’s Memorial March for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and stand in solidarity with those gathering across Canada to honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, trans and two spirit people.

Indigenous women and girls in Canada continue to go missing, and continue to be murdered. Communities and families continue to grieve these losses daily. We acknowledge the vital work of activists, groups and Indigenous community organizations committed to ending gender-based violence and the disproportionate violence, racism and poverty faced by Indigenous women, girls, trans and two spirit people.

Governments in Canada and Ontario continue to neglect the systemic nature of gender-based violence, racism and colonialism in our societies.

The Ontario NDP is committed to fighting for justice for Indigenous communities, and for Indigenous women and girls, and to holding the Ontario government to account on addressing the root causes of gender-based violence against Indigenous women and girls.”
