NDP pledges support for GE plant workers in Peterborough

MPP Catherine Fife (Kitchener-Waterloo), the Ontario NDP’s critic for Economic Development and Employment, issued the following statement concerning job cuts at the GE plant in Peterborough:

'New Democrats stand with the workers and their families whose lives will be deeply impacted by the closure of the Peterborough GE factory. These were good paying jobs that leave families with an uncertain future after long service to the company.

'New Democrats support the employees of the GE plant in Peterborough, their families and the community.

'Too many manufacturing jobs have been lost across the province under Premier Kathleen Wynne's watch. Consecutive Liberal governments have stood by and watched while over 300,000 manufacturing jobs have left the province.  The premier has failed to develop a meaningful jobs strategy to protect and create jobs in Ontario. Instead of helping families keep their jobs in Peterborough, she is making matters worse with skyrocketing hydro rates that are hurting Ontario's manufacturers.

'An NDP government will ensure that workers have a future with good jobs by providing manufacturers with access to the affordable, reliable electricity they need by stopping the sell-off of Hydro One and bringing it back under public ownership.”
