Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles mourns passing of Ed Broadbent

TORONTO – Marit Stiles, the Leader of Ontario’s Official Opposition NDP, issued the following statement on the passing of the Honourable Ed Broadbent, PC, CC:

“We lost a great Canadian today.

Ed always fought with his whole heart for a more just and equal country. He affected historic changes that got us so much closer to that vision, enshrining more rights and liberties for everyone.

He was someone who never stopped learning and finding joy in life. A thoughtful, compassionate and determined intellectual, he had a rare talent for connecting the concerns of ordinary people with the movement for social and economic democracy.

He was a model for parliamentarians of all political stripes, but especially for New Democrats.

Ed was a friend and a mentor to me. He was always there to share his wisdom and to listen during some of the most exciting, and challenging, moments of my time in politics.

Ed has always been there and it’s hard to imagine a future without him. What an incredible legacy he leaves. We’ll continue fighting for his vision of a fairer society through our work as New Democrats and the Broadbent Institute.”
