Ontario NDP marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

QUEEN’S PARK — Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP, and Deputy Leader Sol Mamakwa have issued the following statement to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

“Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day,” said Mamakwa.

“On this day, we remember the children who never came home, and we honour the survivors of residential schools. For over 150 years, more than 150,000 First Nations children were removed from their families and communities. This day is about truth, the truth of what happened in residential schools, and the harm that continues across generations.”

“It’s also about reconciliation, the work that still needs to be done, and the commitments we have to keep,” added Stiles. “Reconciliation is about more than one day. It’s ongoing work. Today and every day we stand with survivors, their families, and their communities. Their stories matter, and their strength guides us forward.”

“Reconciliation is our shared responsibility. On behalf of all of us at Ontario’s NDP, we say clearly: Every Child Matters.”
