TORONTO — Official Opposition NDP Leader Marit Stiles issued the following statement in response to a report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives that finds Canada’s top CEOs make 246 times more than the average worker:
“Less than half an hour into 2024, and Canada’s 100 top-paid CEOs have made more than 200 times what most Canadians will earn in a year.
This is while people are struggling more than ever to afford necessities; while food banks are seeing record usage.
It’s beyond unfair, and it doesn’t have to be this way.
The good news is, we can tackle corporate greed.
While the Ford Conservatives and Crombie Liberals put their corporate friends first, the NDP will take on price-gouging grocers making windfall profits as the rest of us struggle to put food on the table. We’ll establish a provincial grocery code of conduct and a system to investigate and fine corporate predators. We’ll bring in an Ontario food strategy to ensure more local, affordable food is available.
We’ll address the root causes of poverty, so no one in Ontario has to go to bed hungry.
Let’s make Ontario a province for everyone, not just for the super-rich.”
