Orazietti and Wynne deflect blame over their lack of action on steel crisis: NDP

Ontario NDP MPP Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin) slammed the Liberal government for standing on the sidelines pointing fingers at the federal government for  Ontario’s steel crisis instead of acting to do something about it.

“Ontario communities are seeing massive financial losses, job losses and mill closures as foreign countries flood the markets,” said Mantha. “People in Sault St. Marie and Hamilton are faced with layoffs and uncertainty. Workers and their families need an economic development plan that works for them.”

Instead of taking action to address this economic crisis, Mantha said it seems the MPP from Sault Ste. Marie would rather deflect blame onto his federal Liberal cousins.

“The money will run out soon. Workers’ pensions are not secured and they have already had parts of their benefits cut,”  Mantha said.

Mantha asked the Premier and Minister to commit to visiting Sault Ste. Marie, Hamilton and other steel communities to meet with municipal leaders, workers unions, and creditors to work together to determine what measures this government should take to assist these communities and put pressure on the federal government to impose tariffs.

“Will the Premier and her Minister stop grandstanding and deflecting to the feds and take action immediately?” asked Mantha.
